Abstract

Introduction:This research aims to describe the relevance of Instagram for the socialization of adolescents. To do so, we set out objectives such as describing Instagram consumption, trends in the publication of own and/or group photographs, motivations for the use of filters and perceptions about the impact they have on the social interactions received. Methodology:The study participants were 825 adolescents from Asturias (Spain). The instruments applied were created ad hoc to assess sociodemographic characteristics, use and consumption of Instagram, use of filters and beliefs about the use. Participation was inwritten format, and an informed consent was signed guaranteeing anonymity, voluntariness and data protection. Results and discussion:90,3% of adolescents use Instagram and 74,9% post story-type content. 70,3% access Instagram several times a day. 65% never used filters on feed posts. 37,3% reported using filters sometimes in stories. Differences by gender were found, with women using Instagram more to view content, more posts uploading to the feed, more posting in stories where they appear individually, and more using filters. We also detected that as age increases, the frequency of Instagram consumption increases, finding no further significant evidence regarding the type of publications or application of photo filters. Conclusions:The use of Instagram as a relevant socialization space for young people stands out among the results obtained, with social bonding being one of the key motivations for the use of social networks
