Abstract

History and literature have invisibilized women in the maritime world not recognising their work. Their presence on board was scarce as they were associated with "reproductive work" and superstitious beliefs. Entering the sector and rising to positions of power became an obstacle course that only a minority managed to overcome. Spain allowed access to the profession in the 1978 Constitution, but according to the International Maritime Organisation, currently only 2% of the 1.2 million seafarers are women and only 7% are officers. The Escuela Superior de Marina Civil de Gijon promotes the incorporation of women in the sector and investigates the history of those who were previously there “against all odds”.
