Doctor by the Universidad de Oviedo with the thesis Síntesis y reactividad de complejos de rutenio(II) conteniendo ligandos de tipo iminofosforano fosfina y bis(iminofosforano) 2005. Supervised by Dr. José Gimeno Heredia, Dr. Victorio Cadierno.

Joaquín García-Álvarez studied chemistry at the University of Oviedo, where he graduated in 2001. He got his doctorate degree (April 2005), under the supervision of Drs. J. Gimeno and V. Cadierno, studying the coordination of iminophosphorane-type ligands in arene-Ru(II) fragments. In May 2005, he joined the group of Prof. R. E. Mulvey (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK) where he did a post-doctoral stay of two and a half years, working with organometallic compounds of the s-block metals. In 2008, he returned to the University of Oviedo as a regional postdoctoral researcher "Clarín". From this moment, he started his own independent career thanks to the award, as IP, of a national project for young researchers (2009). Since then, his independent scientific activity has focused on: i) the study of organic reactions catalyzed/mediated by transition metal complexes or polar organometallic compounds (RLi/RMgX); and ii) the design of one-pot tandem hybrid protocols (merging metal-, organo- or biocatalyzed processes); using in both cases non-conventional solvents as an alternative reaction medium (water and Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs). This research work has been recognized during the years with the award of: i) a "Juan de la Cierva" contract (2009) and a "Ramón y Cajal" contract (2012); ii) the GEQO prize for Young Researchers RSEQ (2016); iii) a “Beca Leonardo a Investigadores y Creadores Culturales” from the BBVA Foundation (2017); iv) an international project "Green Chemistry research grants for young scientists" of UNESCO/IUPAC/PhosAgro (2018); and v) two national research projects [MINECO-17-CTQ2016-75986-P and MCI-21-PID2020-113473GB-I00 (currently active)] as IP. Since 2002, he has published a total of 88 scientific articles (every year without exception, 59 as the main author), both in general chemistry journals [ACIE, JACS, Chem. Sci., Chem. Eur. J., Chem Commun.], or specialized in different fields of Chemistry [ACS Catal., Green Chem., ACS Sustainable Chem. Eng., ChemSusChem, Inorg. Chem., ChemCatChem, Organometallics, Dalton Trans.] and 12 book chapters in the Area of Homogeneous Catalysis and Sustainable Chemistry. His Hirsch index is 33, with a total number of 2943 citations. He has presented twenty oral communications to national and international congresses, as well as nine invited conferences. Since 2012, he has supervised a Bachelor Thesis, three Final Year Projects, four Master's Thesis and two Doctoral Thesis. He currently holds an Associate Professor (Profesor Titular de Univesridad) position in the area of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Oviedo. Since 2009, he is an expert evaluator of the following research agencies: i) the ANEP; ii) Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology; iii) National Research Council of the Romanian Government; iv) Andalusian Agency of Knowledge; v) National Science Center (Poland); and iv) Agency for Science, Technology and research (A*STAR, Singapore).
