Abstract

After examining the organization of the linguistic expression of certainty in French and Spanish, we found that some French discourse markers that originally expressed certainty have undergone a process of “devaluation” in the diachrony of the language, so that they have ended up conveying non-certainty in contemporary French; among them, the adverb certainement. Having reviewed the existing scientific literature on this adverb, we propose our own analysis based on the scrutiny of all the occurrences in the Frantext database. This examination has enabled us to distinguish three uses, justified by objective linguistic properties and with very different frequencies in contemporary French. The diachronic evolution of certainement reveals that this marker went from initially (12th century) expressing verbal manner to later (14th century) reinforcing assertion in order to communicate, from the 18th century onwards, noncertainty.
