Abstract

The article analyses the potential of the qualitative data analysis programme ATLAS.ti (https://atlasti.com/) for research into second languages, based on multimodal texts. First, the study details the tool, its accessibility, main features and its potential to support research. Next, based on the results of a doctoral thesis in which ATLAS.ti was used to analyse the content of music videos, the analytical procedure of recording primary data is detailed, as well as the encoding, visualisation and interpretation. The final section illustrates how ATLAS.ti facilitated achievement of the thesis objectives. In brief, this tool made it possible to code, visualise and interpret the data obtained; i.e., to conduct a systematic analysis managing large amounts of data. Accordingly, ATLAS.ti represents an appropriate tool for new research practices into the field of second languages with multimodal texts.
