Abstract

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM 5) is one of the main references for the classification and diagnosis of mental disorders. The feminist movement has kept a critical posture on this classification, pointing out its androgenic posture on the understanding and treatment of mental suffering. The review of this manual from a gender prospective is critical to detect and eliminate any bias contributing to women discrimination in the mental health field. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the gender biases present in the Spanish edition of DSM 5. The biases selected with this purpose have been the linguistic androcentrism and the absence of female experts in the main research teams of the manual. The results confirm both biases and reflect the invisibility and the exclusion of women both in the text and in the work teams of diagnostic classification.
