Abstract

The increasing demand on the use of materials in hydrogen-rich environments led to the development of new steels designed to ensure the necessary safety and reliability throughout their service life. In this context, this study evaluated the influence of hydrogen on the notched tensile properties of a quenched and tempered 42CrMo4 steel. The influence of the testing method on hydrogen embrittlement was evaluated using specimens pre-charged in high pressure hydrogen gas, specimens electrolytically pre-charged and also using in-situ hydrogen charging. The variation of the applied cathodic current density and the displacement rate applied in the tests was also studied. The hydrogen embrittlement indexes obtained using in situ charging were always much greater than those recorded using pre-charged specimens, giving always rise to significant changes in the operative failure micromechanisms.
