Resumen
Picos de Europa constitutes one of the most important karst massif of the World due to the high concentration of deep caves. However, the length of these caves are smaller than the cavities formed in other karst areas. Analysing the cave size based on the speleological data and considering the geometry of the karst aquifer, we evidence that the length and depth of the cave of Picos de Europa is controlled by the compartmentalization of the karst aquifers that involve the caves. This situation is caused by the presence of dipped to vertical aquitards that limit the horizontal development of the caves and favour the vertical development of the shafts.
