Doctor by the Universidad de Oviedo with the thesis Biología de la conservación de plantas vasculares en la Cordillera Cantábrica Prioridades y casos de estudio 2008. Supervised by Dr. José Antonio Fernández Prieto, Dr. Álvaro Bueno Sánchez.

Borja Jiménez-Alfaro coordinates the Vegetation and Biodiversity Lab at the Department of Organismal and Systems Biology (Botany section). Since 2021 is the Director of Science of the Jardín Botánico Atlántico de Gijón, leading a multiannual research project funded by an agreement between the Gijón City Council and the University of Oviedo. He is currently Deputy Director of the Biodiversity Research Institute, IMIB (CSIC-Unviersity of Oviedo-Principality of Asturias), and Vicepresident of the International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS).
