Doctor by the Universidad de Oviedo with the thesis Metodología de análisis de modelado de sistemas de eventos discretos mediante técnicas orientadas a objetos aplicación a la generación de la lógica de control basada en iec 61131-3 2002. Supervised by Dr. Felipe Sánchez Mateos.
I received my BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees in Computer Science from the University of Oviedo, Spain, in 1993, 1997 and 2002 respectively. I am an Associate Professor within the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Oviedo, where I coordinates the Master’s degree in Automation Engineering and Industrial Informatics. I have been Deputy-dean for Internationalization of the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón for nine years, and Deputy-dean of University-Business Relations at the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón for 1 year. I have been the coordinator of the agreement between CERN (the European Center For Nuclear Research) and the University of Oviedo for the Project Associate Program since 2007. I have been appointed as the Head of the Biomedical Engineering Center in February 2024. In 2002 I spent 6 months as visiting researcher at Skövde University in Sweden where I conducted researches about object-oriented analysis and modeling methodologies applied to development of PLC control programs. In 2014 I spent 3 months at Rutgers University, New Jersey (USA), as visiting researcher where I conducted investigations about AI applied to time series analysis. In 2023 and 2024 I spent four months in total at Purdue University, Indiana (USA) as a visiting researcher where I conducted investigations about AI applied to prostate and mama cancer modeling. My actual research interests include AI, machine learning and deep learning, applied to biomedical engineering, e.g. health and aging well. Throughout my career I have advised 2 PhD theses, and I am advising 1 more now. I have been principal investigator (IP) at two R&D European Projects (FP7-SME), at two national R&D projects (CDTI), at one regional project (FICYT), and at one privately founded R&D project (Microsoft Research Ltd). I have taken part as researcher in another national R&D project (MITYC) and at 10 regional R&D projects (FICYT). I have obtained positive evaluation for three six-year research terms (“sexenios de investigación”), and in the last 5 years I have coauthored 8 papers published in international JCR indexed journals (all of them in Q1Q2), and 16 papers in conferences (12 of them international). I have special interest in giving back to society, especially in the form of technology transfer. I founded and I was the CEO of a spin-off company of my research group for 9 years (2003-2012). I have been part of the working team of 47 contracts with industry, being the coordinator (PI) in 34 of them. I have coauthored 10 patents and IP (software) products, which are or have been under commercialization. I have also made a special contribution in the field of training of young researchers. I am the coordinator of the Cooperation Agreement between CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) and the University of Oviedo for the "Project Associate" program since 2007. This program allowed more than 100 young researchers to start their career at CERN. 33% continue at CERN. Some others moved to R&D departments of different companies worldwide like Google, PMI, Amazon, etc. And some others founded companies such as “Aloha Clouds” (https://www.alohaclouds.com). I have been appointed Head of the Biomedical Engineering Center of the University of Oviedo in February 2024. I have been appointed Head (IP) of the official research group "Modeling, Inspection, Diagnose and Automation of Systems (MIDAS)" of the Un
