Doctor by the Universidad de Oviedo with the thesis Detección de defectos superficiales mediante el procesamiento de interferogramas de holografía conoscópica 2003. Supervised by Dr. Ignacio Álvarez García.
I have been involved in research projects and contracts in the field of process automation, control, simulation, and monitoring since my Master Thesis, back in 1997. For my PhD (2003) I focused my research in optical methods for industrial inspection, that is advanced techniques for in-line product quality inspection, or process condition monitoring which involved the processing of electromagnetic waves mostly around the visible spectrum. These include classical machine vision techniques, but also more sophisticated methods, including those taking advantage of the wave nature of light, such as interference or diffraction. In 2019, a fascinating and challenging opportunity arose to start a new research line in biomedical applications of machine learning and visual analytics along with the GSDPI group and researchers from the field of biomedicine. Just a few months later (2020), we made our first publication in Oxford Bioinformatics, which is a highly ranked journal in its category (D1) and a referent in the field.
