After graduating in Medicine in 2008, my research activity began in parallel to my training as a specialist in Intensive Medicine (2009-2014), within the Translational Research Group on Critical Patients of the University of Oviedo, recently created then and led by who was my mentor, Dr. Guillermo Muñiz Albaiceta. From this activity, high-impact publications have been constantly released since 2011, as a result of my participation as a member of the research team in projects funded by the Carlos III Health Institute (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, ISCIII). After obtaining the Doctorate in the Molecular and Cellular Biology doctoral program of the University of Oviedo (2016), this research activity was supported by the granting of a Río Hortega contract (ISCIII, AES2016) to acquire and develop skills as a medical researcher of the National Health System. This development is accompanied by a progressive scientific maturity and independence, supported by projects funded by La Marató TV3 (2021), and Carlos III Health Institute (AES2021), already as principal investigator. More recently (AES2022) I was granted a Juan Rodés contract, co-financed by the European Union, with the aim of consolidating the figure of medical research staff, this being my current position since March 2023. This contract allows me to combine healthcare and research activities, facilitating the translational and multidisciplinary nature of the lines on which my current research activity is focused. One of the lines in development stems from the interest in delving into the molecular mechanisms of the acute response to critical illness and focuses on its impact on the development of long-term sequelae in survivors of intensive care units. This line of work focuses on two fundamental dimensions of the so-called post-ICU syndrome, covering, on the one hand, the pathogenetic mechanisms of muscle weakness acquired in the ICU and, on the other, the development of neurocognitive disorders. The work model applied to these lines combines the use of preclinical models (cells, animal models) with clinical studies and biological samples from patients, with the aim of obtaining results that can be quickly transferred from the laboratory to the biosanitary field, to improve healthcare practice. Since 2018, the research group to which I belong has joined the CIBER of Respiratory Diseases. In this consortium dependent on the ISCIII, I carry out not only my research activity but also management and training tasks as Coordinator of the CIBERES Training Program and member of the Steering Committee. More recently (starting during 2021-2022 academic year), I held a position as Associate Professor in Health Sciences at the University of Oviedo, teaching in the Degree in Medicine. Other teaching tasks carried out include participation in international courses and symposiums, as well as teaching in the Master's Degree in the Critically Ill and Emergencies at the University of Barcelona.
