Abstract

Envelope Tracking (ET) is an option to improve the efficiency of Radio Frequency Power Amplifiers (RFPA). A high bandwidth DC/DC converter called Envelope Amplifiers (EA) is used to modulate the supply voltage of the RFPA. This paper analyzes the use of Two-Phase Buck converters as Envelope Amplifiers. The effect of the multiphase operation is analyzed regarding the tracking capabilities. A fourth order filter is employed to increase the attenuation of the harmonics generated by the PWM operation, then increasing the ratio between the switching frequency and the converter bandwidth. The filter is designed regarding the tracking accuracy and the side bands derived from the PWM modulation. Experimental results, using a two-phase converter operating at a switching frequency of 10 MHz are shown.
