Abstract

The review of the stratigraphy of the Ermita Formation supports subdivision in the Valverde, Baleas and Remedio members. The latter member is formally proposed in this study. Sedimentation of the Ermita Formation in the upper Famennian post-dated a regional, angular unconformity. Uplift of the Cantabrian block seems to have been active from the early Famennian, coinciding with sediment supplies from the Variscan hinterland. The uplift and erosion sealed by the regional unconformity occurred between the middle and late Famennian. The next Mississippian interval of condensed sedimentation includes a paraconformity associated to erosion recognized by an intra-Tournaisian hiatus. The interval of starved basin with low subsidence rate ended in the late Serpukhovian. It was coeval with the continental collision and the formation of orogenic troughs filled by sediments with the propagation of the Variscan deformation in the hinterland.
