Abstract

Introduction: pathologies that involve an alteration in hemoglobin are called hemoglobinopathies and are strictly controlled and monitored by medical personnel, due to the severity of said condition. Objective: to analyze the behavior of patients with hemoglobinopathies treated at the Pediatric Hospital "Pepe Portilla", in Pinar del Río, from January to June 2015. Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 45 randomly selected patients from a universe of 120 patients. Results: most of the patients belonged to the male sex, which represented 51.11%. Regarding age, patients located in the ranges of 1-4 and 5-9 years predominated, with 28.89% in both cases. The hemoglobinopathy that prevailed was the one affecting hemoglobin S, or sicklemia, with 51.11%. Regarding the nutritional status, there was a predominance of thin individuals with 62.22%. In turn, thoracic vasocclusive crises and joint pain were the most frequent clinical manifestations among the patients. The municipality of Pinar del Río was the most affected with 26.55% of all cases. Conclusions: the behavior of the patients with hemoglobinopathies treated at said institution was determined, who were followed by the genetic service and are currently undergoing treatment or control directed by the National Program for Comprehensive Attention to patients with sickle cell disease.
