Abstract

The glass is a unique construction material, that offers many benefits (visual, heat insulation, acoustic insulation, etc). Aesthetics offered by glass applications motivate designers and owners to use this material in an audacious way, creating risk situations when the glass breaks. Studies conducted to the drafting of the BTC-SU have been able to show that concepts such as “definition of security glass”, “critic risk areas” and “reference test method” are already harmonized, however there are many parameters without consensus criteria. Some International Codes present solutions based on the type of glass, thickness and maximum area. The experience of the research group says that the solutions obtained only with this parameters do not guarantee the fulfillment of the level of performance specified by the “Security of Use” Requirement. It becomes necessary to arrange: a) a set of acceptable solutions and, b) verification methods as an alternative to the experimental test. Acceptable solutions and the verification methods must be adapted to critic risk areas for human impact, and to the common constructive solutions for buildings.
