This paper aims at analyzing the origin and development of the European proposal for an ‘Artificial Intelligence Act’, i.e. the European Union’s project toadoptasetofharmonisedrulesforthedevelopment,market introduction and use of AI systems in a way that is compatible with human dignity and individual autonomy, human rights and fundamental freedoms, the functioning of democracy and respect for the rule of law. At the time this paper is being written (20 November 2023) the legislative process has not been completed. Nonetheless, it is interesting to learn about its development, the significant and quick technological changes it has had to cope with and the impact that the proposal it is already having on the European Union and abroad
