Abstract

This paper is based on the particularities of conflict in universities in order to analyse the role of mediation as a conflict resolution mechanism in this field. To this end, it takes into account the different experiences linked to disciplinary proceedings and university ombudsmen’s offices, as well as the pioneering initiatives that have given rise to coexistence, mediation or conflict management units as specific and specialised services. This is followed by a study of the recently approved University Coexistence Law, which opens up new perspectives in this respect. And, in relation to it, the proposals of the CUEMYC for its adequate implementation are taken into consideration, as well as the draft of the Coexistence Regulations of the University of Oviedo. Finally, some guidelines to be taken into account for the design and implementation of a university mediation programme are included.
