A 42CrMo4 steel was submitted to different heat treatments (annealing, normalizing and quenching and tempering) in order to obtain different microstructures. Tensile tests on notched specimens were then performed in air and also under in-situ electrochemical hydrogen charging using two different hydrogenated conditions. Hydrogen embrittlement increases as the hardness (strength) of the steel does and, in order to optimize the steel properties in presence of hydrogen, it is necessary to progressively decrease the strength of the steel as its internal hydrogen content increases. Otherwise, quenched and tempered martensite microstructures always behave better than ferrito-pearlitic and bainitic ones with similar hardness.
