Abstract

The design of steel structures with removable joints based on welded studs, has advantages because its elements can be disassembled, reused, and recycled. The ultimate resistance of this type of structural connection is mainly determined by the resistance of the welded studs. In this paper, the resistance of different types of commercial studs welded to different structural tube geometries is evaluated analytically and experimentally. To this aim, the experimental mechanical properties of the welded studs in the fusion zone, in the heat-affected zone and in the base metals of the stud and the tube are determined. With these data, the resistance to tension, punching shear and lamellar tearing of the welded stud is determined analytically. Finally, the experimental results are compared with the analytical predictions. From the data analysis it is observed that, if appropriate mechanical properties are used, the resistance of the stud is possible to be analytically predicted. According to the results achieved, the use of the nominal properties of the stud and tube is justified in practical designs in which these mechanical properties are not possible or feasible to be determined.
