Zusammenfassung

International trade would not be the possible without maritime transport, and the latter would be unfeasible without the existence of seaports. Therefore, port activity has been crucial in terms of trade flows worldwide, but its relevance is even greater when it comes to the accessibility local regions to overseas markets and, hence, the competitiveness of these regions in a global world. At the same time, port activity also depends on the economic cycle and it is related to the ups and downs of the international trade evolution. This article shows the current trends of port activity, comparing the effects of the two disruptions suffered by the maritime traffic in the 21st century: the financial crisis and the breakdown caused by SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Likewise, the evolution of port governance models is reviewed and the keys to success in the traffic competition are addressed, concluding with a review of the current situation of the Spanish port industry
