Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a mouthwash containing1% potassium nitrate and 1.13% sodium monol1uorophosphate in reducing dentinal hypersensitivity (DH). Patients y methods: 57 male and female consecutive adult patients, treated in the periodontal clinic at the School of Stomatology of Oviedo, and two private periodontal clinics, and with at least on: tooth with DH equal to or greater than 2 on the VRS scale, were voluntarily recruited for an 8-week randomized dintical trial. The test group received a mouthwash containing 1% potassium nitrate and 1.13% sodium monofluorophosphate, and the control group a placebo. Results and Discussion: Major reduction of the frequency of daily episodes of DH in the test group (40.8%) than in the controls (33.3%) were found. A significant decrease of the subjective intensity of DH of l.9(SD~l.2) was observed in the test group, this been three times greater than the controls. In addition, a signifiant decrease of 43.4% of the DH detected by thermical stimulation was found, this been 2.6 times greater than the controls. No significant differences were found for the tactile stimulation test. These data support previous observations on the efficacy of the potassium nitrate mouthwash in reducing HD.
