Zusammenfassung

This paper examines potentialities and problems concerning the use of toponymy in archaeological and historical research. Subsequently, the need for a compilation of popular place-names from oral tradition is formulated according to a procedure that guarantees its usefulness in research. Finally, two case studies from western Asturias are used to show some possible applications of toponymy in research on historical landscapes. In the examples chosen, this source plays a key role in the construction of interpretations within a horizontal dialogue with other sources: archaeological, documentary and cartographic.
