Abstract

The Bologna declaration of 1999 is generallyaccepted as the starting point of the transitiontowards the European Higher Education Area. Sucha transition was bound to be a long and windingroad, and Spanish universities have been indeedinvolved in a whirlwind of changes affecting manyof its areas of operation: study plans, teachingmethods, degrees, hiring... They substantially affectthe very conception of the university and its role insociety. After this 15-year process that has transformedSpanish universities and consumed a big share oftheir energy, it seems reasonable to look back, getout of that whirlwind for a moment and thinkcarefully about where we’ve arrived and where wewere intended to be 15 years ago.
