Abstract

This essay discusses the importance of Christine de Pizan in building the collective memory of women throughout human history. The Italian-French writer wrote The City of Ladies (Le Livre de la Cité des Dames) in 1405, in extraordinary anticipation of topics that would be treated by Mary Wollstonecraft about three hundred years later. Through a discursive analysis of relevant quotes from The City of Ladies, translated into Italian by Patrizia Caraffi, this essay situates Christine de Pizan as a fundamental author for understanding the history of feminism thought as a political and philosophical tradition. In this sense, we propose a reflection on how Christine de Pizan enabled the foundation of the City of Ladies as a place of cultural memory, where women gain eternal glory and free themselves from their assailants. Ultimately, creating a symbolic place that made possible the development of a Western feminist tradition.
