of countries across the World. It boosts communications between cities and contributes to weak the public transport network in rural areas to the point of making them dependent on private transportssuch as personal cars. Reversing this situation and improving sustainable territorial communications could be a reality with the application of a continuous transport chain combining the high-speed railway network and the public transport based on the road infrastructure. The viability of its implementation is assessed in this research by means of a holistic methodology that comprehends the application of the accessibility indicator through the assessment of the territory and its accessibility. The exposed methodology has been applied and validated in a case study developed in the region of Ciudad Real (Spain), showing a significant increase of the accessibility of rural areas offered by the intermodal system. The results obtained through this innovative approach pave the way towards other regions in Spain under problems of territorial unbalance.
