Resumen

Truchas SyncUnorium is the major slate producing area in Spain, who is the principal roofing-slate world producer (c. 80%). However Spanish production might have problems to supply the slate world market since the annual production has been increasing consecutively from 17.000 ton-year (1967) to 650.000 ton-year (2001). In consequence, reserves of the main quarries are exhausts and slate industry presents an excessive segmentation (>100 companies). Take in account this framework we highlight the most important geological features of the Truchas SyncUnorium in order to define a deposit model, which allows the location and assessment of new slate deposits. Some keys for a better management of the present resources have been also proposed.
