Abstract

Nature-based solutions are at the centre core of new urban developments and urban retrofitting strategies from the European Union. The main aim of this strategy is to ensure that Green Infrastructure becomes part of the spatial planning and territorial development, being an alternative to conventional grey systems. Despite the fact that the society demands the implementation of these systems, it still remains a lack of a comprehensive education at University level, especially in those studies related to urbanism and land-planningsuch as civil engineering and architecture. The University of Oviedo has pioneered the development of a programme to respond to this knowledge gap by introducing Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems at Civil Engineering and Master Degrees, and Doctorate Programme. The main target was the development of real competences to design, construct and maintain nature-based solutions, and thus, creating engineers who are capable of responding to this societal challenge. This new programme, consisting on the introduction of the topic at several subjects is presented in this article as well as the results and positive impacts derived from this pilot experience in Europe.
