Resumen

Introduction. The high incidence of breast cancer in women makes this disease a serious worldwide public health problem. Psychological stress and personality are some of the risk factors studied in breast cancer. Objective: The aim of this article is to examine the psychological stress and personality traits with breast cancer risk and its empirical evidence. Method: A review was carried out, including literature studies of latest 11 years investigating the relation between stress and personality with breast cancer. Results: We live in a binary society, where coping strategies are conditioned by gender stereotypes. This social construction of gender increases the vulnerability of women in certain health issues, which highlights the importance to introduce the gender perspective in research. Currently, there is no agreement on the association between psychological stress/personality and the risk of suffering breast cancer. To develop preventive strategies, it is necessary to increase the scientific research of psychological risk factors.
