Beliefs about psychological disorders can condition the way of approaching them. For this reason, the objective of this research is to create and validate a questionnaire that evaluates how the students of Health Sciences at the University of Oviedo understand and describe psychological disorders, as well as the beliefs about functionality in these people, and the relationship between both. The sample consisted of 275 students with a mean age of 21 years (SD= 4). The instrument was a 28-item ad hoc questionnaire. In the exploratory factor analysis, three factors were identified (medical Model, contextual model and functionality). The medical model and the contextual model were independent of each other. The medical model was more related to functionality. Non-psychology students score significantly higher on the medical model. There were no differences in the contextual model. It is concluded that a valid and reliable questionnaire has been created; that the non-psychology students of Health Sciences present more related beliefs to the medical model; that the contextual model is absent in all disciplines; and that there is a relationship between the Medical Model and more pessimistic beliefs regarding functionality. The implications of these results in clinical practice are discussed.
