Abstract

The article comments on Juan Pimentel's book, taking into consideration the question of Spanish science from the perspective opened up by Gustavo Bueno's theory of categorial closure, as well as the role of the arts in the shaping of scientific content during the period prior to the irruption of photography. It is also a tribute to the efforts of authors such as Juan Pimentel to rescue from oblivion the important contributions of Spanish science during the Empire, showing that such a political enterprise could only be carried out with the deployment of a fundamental institutionalisation of scientific studies.
