Resumen

This paper presents an approach to Roberto Gerhard’s compositional youth. We will focus specifically on the early years of the Pedrell magisterium (1917-1918), when he composed his Trio en Si (unpublished and preserved at the Institut d'Estudis Vallencs) and his second Trio edited by Maurice Sénart in 1921 and much better known. The analysis of these two works has allowed us to corroborate the undeniable influence with the chamber music of Maurice Ravel, concretely with the Trio (1914) and the Quartet in F Major (1903). In addition, we will appreciate the use of Debussy’s resources and the imprint of Pedrell. We will try to justify these references through analysis, personal documentation and the study of the reception of these authors in the Barcelona, at this time. We hope this work will help to recognize: the main influences of the young Gerhard, his way of understanding the composition during the Pedrell stage and the beginning of a search for modernity that will eventually lead him to study with Schoenberg.
