Abstract

Introduction to Sedimentary Petrology is a free access course from the University of Oviedo where knowledge of the subject is collected as it has been taught and is currently taught in the first course of the degree in Geology at the University of Oviedo. It mainly addresses the basic and practical petrographic aspects of the different types of sedimentary rocks (composition, texture, classification and diagenesis), the procedures for their study and, to a lesser extent, their genetic and applied aspects. The course includes the class material constituted by the presentations with the theoretical content of the subject, organized in ten topics (general concepts; exogenous cycle; characteristics and study techniques; rudites; sandstones; mudrocks: vol- canoclastic; carbonated; siliceous, phosphate and ferruginous; evaporites and organic) and practical activities where diffe- rent exercises are proposed (definitions, petrographic lexicon, classifications, study techniques and microscopic petrographic images for identification) and later the result is indicated. In addition, complementary documents on some topics are provi- ded as study material, and within the section other resources relevant information freely available on the web (books, web pages, presentations and documents). Finally, it provides an evaluation of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired through the performance of different types of test exercises and indicates the answers.
