Abstract

A database has been created within a geographic information system (GIS) to manage the Courel Mountains UNESCO Glo- bal Geopark (NW Spain). The database includes 66 coverages of topographic, geologic, mining, biologic, archaeologic and ethnographic information that may be combined for the elaboration of thematic maps considering purpose and audience. The maps are used for scientific dissemination, technical assistance for the Geopark’s management, development of scientific studies and geoconservation actions. Altogether, the GIS-database is a powerful instrument for policy-making, facilitating the identification and evaluation of alternatives.
