Abstract

This work presents a regularity indicator for outline mineral particles observed in 2D. This new indicator is a mathematical combination of different shape parameters: Fractal Dimension (DF), Solidity (So), Normalized Perimeter-Area (¥), Wade- ll`s Roundness (Rw) and Sphericity (S). The procedure followed was as follows: i) quantification of shape parameters in 18 theoretical particles designed previously by means of ImagePro Plus, ImageJ and Roussillon Toolbox software, ii) qualita- tive-quantitative evaluation of representativity of these shape parameters, iii) mathematical development of regularity indi- cator by means of multiple linear regression, iv) validation and application of indicator developed in a study case. The work allowed to realise an evaluation of the representativity of the shape parameters quantified, identifying their deviations and limitations when describing the shape of mineral particles, and, mainly, to define the regularity parameter RBC described as RBC = -3,23DF + 0,003So – 0,16 ¥c + 0,04Rwc + 4,31. Likewise, an automated procedure for quantifying shape parameters is presented based on the joint use of digital image analysis and processing software.
