In the north-western sector of the Monsacro (central area of Asturias), a Variscan imbricate thrust system involving a Devonian-Carboniferous succession has been recognized. The major structure is a tight antiformal syncline which folds the thrusts sheets, which were rotated up to 180º regarding their original attitude. This implies an extraordinary overturn in the Cantabrian Zone. The antiformal syncline was initially a fault-bend fold developed in the transition from a footwall flat to footwall ramp. Later, this fold was substantially tightened and overturned, giving rise to the present attitude of the imbricate thrust system.
