Abstract

Fifteen populations of white clover and nine of red clover collected in the north of Spain werecompared in order to be used in lays. The populations were sown in dense sward plots and comparedwith commercial varieties. In white clover six of the mixtures with populations gave betteryield than the average of the mixtures with commercial varieties. In red clover all the populationsshowed better yield than the commercial variety. The analysis of variance showed significant differencesfor populations in both species. Therefore, this genetic material is considered of with ahigh agronomic value to be used in breeding programs to create commercial varieties with autochthonousgenetic base for sowing lays in wet temperate areas.
