Abstract

The genus Agrostis includes a large number of species; some are commercially important turfgrass species oftenused on golf courses. The exact ploidy level of the bentgrass accessions conserved in the seed collection of the PlantProduction Area of the University of Oviedo is unknown, which could difficult the use of this material in future breedingprograms. The objective of this research was to determine the ploidy level and nuclear DNA content of 20 Agrostisaccessions, 19 of this collection and the cv Golfin of Agrostis capillaris L., using flow cytometry. Among the 20 accessions, four diploids, 13 tetraploids and three hexaploids were identified. Although within each ploidy level nuclear DNA contentdid not distinguish clearly the different species of Agrostis, the tetraploid A. stolonifera presented a significantly highernuclear DNA value than other tetraploid accessions of Agrostis.
