Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.), as a C4 plant, exhibits greater photosynthetic efficiency than C3 plants, but ata higher energy cost. It is therefore essential to optimize the density of the photosyntheticapparatus in the commercial sowing of maize. The effect of plant density (4, 8 and 12 plants m-2) onleaf area and productivity of the early maize hybrid (FAO 300 cycle) ‘PR37N01’ was studied in acomplete block design with three replications in Candás (Asturias) in 2016. As the density increased, grain yield components in each plant, such as grains ear-1 (from 556 to 486), grains ear-1 weight(from 197.1 to 118.2 g) and grain weight (from 358.2 to 244.9 mg). Likewise, the values of leaf areaand individual and total leaf weight decreased as plant density increased. On the other hand, grainyield increased from 8859 kg ha-1 to 9513 kg ha-1 from 4 plants m-2 to 8 plants m-2, and thendecreased to 8485 kg ha-1 at the highest density of 12 plants m-2.
