Abstract
Since 2007, the Fundación Ciudad de la Energía (CIUDEN) is developing R&D activities on CO2 geological storage, including scientific, technological and cost reduction issues related with this industrial process. Among these issues, there are: i) geological and social characterization of the selected area for the real-scale Technological Development Plant (Hontomín, Burgos); ii) risk assessment by the application of Bayesian networks; iii) study of natural analogues of CO2 storage and leakage; iv) improvement of electromagnetic techniques within the monitoring plan of the storage complex or processing of the acquired seismic data, and v) design of new injection and characterization strategies for the storage complex. The aforementioned TDP, which includes three 1500 m-deep instrumented wells in a Jurassic limestone saline aquifer, the PISCO2 Plant for biomonitoring of CO2 diffuse leaks and the CCS Laboratory for testing and characterization, complete CIUDEN’s R&D tools for geological storage. In order to promote scientific and technical training and education of highly prepared personnel, a PhD program with 9 students was launched in 2009.
