Abstract

We present here a teaching innovation project that has been implemented in the subject "Instrumental Techniques Applied to Mineral Characterization" (3rd year of the Geology Degree at the University of Oviedo). The project consists of an experience close to the project-based learning (PBL) methodology. Throughout one academic year, the students have cooperatively developed a simple research project proposed by teachers. This project involved the identification and characterization of a mineral of interest by using diverse instrumental techniques. The project was a connecting thread for the whole subject. In addition to the specific skills of the subject, the project allowed the students to work on generic skills such are the preparation of scientific reports, oral presentation and dissemination of scientific research. All the participating students have successfully passed the course. In addition, the project has improved the motivation of all those who have participated on it, the student attendance at lectures and laboratory sessions and the satisfaction of students and teachers.
