Abstract
In this work the geotechnical characterization of clays as a product of carbonates decalcification is exposed taking the city of Gijón (Asturias, Spain) as a case study. The subsoil of Gijón is composed of a powerful clay layer originated by chemical alteration of Jurassic limestones and dolomites. The studies have been made on a wide number of samples and allow to establish the geotechnical properties of the clays. In order to evaluate its behavior quantitatively, the aptitude of the materials in relationship to shallow foundations has been studied. The results confirm that these cohesive materials, the common laying level for building foundations in the urban area, present mechanical deficiencies such as reduced bearing capacity and the appearance of remarkable consolidation settlements, especially when a traditional support by isolated pad foundations is used.
