Resumen

The Regional Institute for Research and Agrofood Development from the Principality of Asturias conducts trials of evaluation of maize varieties for silage since 1996 to the present time, in the four edaphoclimatic areas suitable for cultivation in the Autonomous Community. The results are published annually in the following lists: Main List (includes varieties with a minimum assessment of two years ), Provisional List (includes those evaluated only for a year) and Complementary List (include the varieties evaluated, but already withdrawn from the market). The present paper shows a comprehensive statistical analysis of the evaluation across 15 years. Evaluation results allow to discriminate with a minimum of errors among edaphoclimatic areas, but accuracy is lower among lists, although it will probably increase in the future. Dry matter yield, starch content and lodging resistance of the new varieties improved with time since the beginning of trials, while estimated organic matter digestibility has not experienced a clear improvement. The varieties included in the Main List lead the list of varieties sold each year in Asturias and it was observed that the amount of seed sold of each variety is moderately influenced by the above mentioned features results.
