Abstract

Experimental data together with thermodynamic calculations are presented here on a cordierite-rich monzogranite of the Cabeza de Araya batholith (Cáceres). Both approaches failed to crystallize cordierite for different pressure, and water content conditions in significant amounts comparable to the original mineral assemblage of the selected rock; the cordierite-rich facies of the Cabeza de Araya batholith. This indicates that cordierite is not in equilibrium with the bulk rock compositions and the presence of cordierite in this rock type can only be explained in terms of a complex model that combines both assimilation of contaminants and hybridization with calcalcaline magmas.
