Abstract

The Technical Unit for Quality of the University of Oviedo has carried out the General Survey of Teaching Activity since the academic year 2000/2001, with the aim of determining the valuation by students and teachers of the teaching-learning process. The current model questionnaire for students includes fifteen items distributed in five dimensions. As a result of the appraisal based on a Likert scale from 0 to 10, we get a rate for each triple teacher-subject-group. The study has a double purpose. On the one hand, to identify the best rated teachers, in order to give them recognition for a good teaching practice. On the other hand, in the case of the worst rated teachers, to analyze the items or dimensions that significantly explain the low valuation, in order to propose improvement actions related to them. The first attemption is to identify variables directly unrelated to the teaching practice that may have an influence on the valuation, such as the compulsory or optional character of a subject, or the number of students in a group, with the aim of introducing correction factors to the rating. After having corrected the rating, graphical, numerical and statistical analysis tools have been used to identify the rates that were not within the fixed upper and lower specification limits. As a result of the study, 4% of the evaluated lecturers have been positively recognised and improvement actions were proposed to 1%. The results of this study help to guide the decision-making process regarding the recognition to good teaching practices and the development of improvement actions in case of having detected deficiencies.
