Zusammenfassung

The present work carries out an analysis of orientations and motivation in a Spanish English as a foreign language context. The first objective is to identify Spanish university students’ reasons to study English, to reduce the reasons into several orientation factors and analyse the significance of these orientations in our context. The second objective is to examine the relationships among orientation and motivation and L2 achievement. The participants were 195 students from the University of Oviedo who had English for Specific Purposes as a subject in their curriculum. Factor analysis of orientation items yielded nine factors that represent the ethnolonguistic situation in which Spanish college students are placed. Regression analyses showed that all the orientations influence motivation.
