Abstract

University dropout is a problem of global incidence, verified in more than 180 countries by the International Association of Universities. Its incidence in Spain reach 20% of university students. Therefore, it is an important political and economical problem that cost to Spanish government around 1500 million euros per year. University of Oviedo has studied this phenomenon through the Project Alfaguia (University Integral Management of Dropout Project) and the obtained results emphasize a link between dropout and variables related to students´ integration and socialization. In addition, we will review a selection of preventive actions that the universities implement in order to promote a proper social and academic adaptation of university students, thus minimizing the consequences of this problem.
