Abstract

The present research adresses the study of 5 children exhumed in 2016 in the late Antiquity necropolis of Herrera de Pisuerga (Palencia) to increase the limited bibliography on anthropological studies of the child population at that time. The sex and age of death were determined and a macroscopic study of each bone element has been carried out, showing the presence of caries and tartar deposits, as a consequence of ingesting large amounts of carbohydrates and little amount animal protein and vegetables. There are two cases of cribra orbitaria, a frequent injury in deficiency diseases. There are no children under the age of 18 months, suggesting differential treatment for the bodies of newborns
