Zusammenfassung

This article aims to provide an overview of the contemporary theatre of India. The explanation and understanding of the historical postcolonial context of the subcontinent which was subject to two centuries of British colonization is essential in order to appreciate the dialogue that Indian authors establish in their plays, which provides an insight into the very cultural essence of the subcontinent that fuses with the elements inherited from the colonial period. This leads these playwrights to the need to emphasize the authentically Indian identity (“indianness”) and to explain the complex nature of interculturalism in the case of Indian theatre.
