Resumen

From the perspective of the attachment theory, traditional parenting patterns that include physical punishment lead to disorganized- or fearful-attached children. The similarity between the typical attitudes of people who have suffered abuse and the expected attitudes of a good soldier suggests that the fearful attachment style turns out to be adaptive in contexts in which attack or defense strategies must take precedence over care strategies. On the basis of this approach, we explore the idea that the traits traditionally attributed to masculinity can be understood as arising from an ancient social interest in keeping men ready for battle. We conclude that the cost of violent parenting is high, both for men and women, and is expressed through adult attachment disorders and problems with raising their own children. In the therapeutic practice, we see this perspective as essential in order to understand many family situations and to counteract ideologies that maintain them.
